Circular Quay is located at the north end of Sydney’s Central Business District
in Sydney Cove, between Bennelong Point and The Rocks. It’s here that ferries depart
to different tourist destinations around Sydney including Watson’s Bay and Taronga
Zoo. The neighbouring área ‘The Rocks’ is home to a great number of bars, restaurants
and cafeterias.
The atmosphere at Circular Quay is always vibrant as it’s home to street artists, funny
shows and live music. From here you can easily walk around the harbour to the Sydney
Opera House.
The Quay was the initial disembarkation place of the first fleet at Port Jackson, in 1788
and was built between 1837-1844. It was originally known as "Semi-Circular Quay", but
the name was shortened for convenience. In 1870 the port was considered too small
to harbour the increasing number of ships, and so ferry quays were built in 1979. Since
1890, the ferry terminals have dominated the harbour, and Circular Quay became the
axis of the Sydney ferry network.
