Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race
Sydney is a popular city with a lot to offer from museums and zoo’s to botanical
gardens and rooftop bars, but one special attraction is the Sydney-Hobart Yach
Race which takes place annually. This popular and historical sailing event see’s
some of the countries best sailors take to the harbour for a day of fun and
festivities.
The Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is an event organised by the Cruising Yacht
Club of Australia. The first edition of this sports activity was in 1945, and since
then it has become the primary representations of this discipline and has
influenced other international yacht events.
The race starts in Sydney on Boxing Day and finishes in Hobart, Tasmania. The
distance of the race is approximately 630 nautical miles (1.170 km). It is
considered as one of the most difficult yacht races worldwide.
This regatta is a symbol of the summer sport in Australia, and of course, in
Sydney. It attracts hundreds of people yearly including competitors, spectators
and the media. The race gains great coverage, and the city becomes a sporting
epi-centre over the weekend as it’s as important to the locals as the Australian
Open.
There’s fun for all the family too as there’s always live music, street food, live
streaming and many other forms of entertainment. There are also lots of lookout
spots to watch the race including Rushcutters Bay, Watsons Bay and South
Head. The best viewpoints on the northern coast are Cremorne Point, Bradleys
Head and Clifton Gardens.
The Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race is the most challenging sailing competition at
the international level, and since it’s inauguration, the race has paid tribute to
both the record holders and those who lost their lives at sea. It is an exceptional
experience whether you’re participating or watching from the side as it brings
the city together to enjoy popular culture and sporting tradition.
